CharacterCharacter Name: Emmet Brickowski
Canon: The Lego Movie
Canon Point: Post-movie
Type: Canon
Age: It's unknown how old he is as a toy, maybe round 8 ½ at the oldest since that's when Lord Business came into power and he doesn't seem to remember anything before then.
Mentally he's around his mid-20's, although
very innocent
History/Key Points: - First of all, the Lego world is actually an intricate Lego collection made by a guy only known as “The Man Upstairs”, a man who obsesses with his Lego collection being perfect to the point to gluing figures together so that they can't be messed with. The “real” story is that his son, Finn, is upset that he's not allowed to play with his dad's collection, so he sneaks off to play with them with his dad's not around, presumably to both vent and because he feel like he shouldn't stay away from the collection. Lord Business is basically his dad exaggerated.
- Emmet may actually be a conscious being normally though? The forcing himself to fall off the bench is kind of telling.
- In any case, about 8 ½ years before the movie began, Lord Business stole the Kragle (a Krazy Glue bottle) from Vitruvius, but before he makes off with it, Vitrivius makes up a prophecy that there will be a really cool guy called “The Special” who finds the Piece of Resistance (a Krazy Glue bottle cap) and stop Lord Business.
- Since then, Lord Business has gained total control over the universe and is the president of Bricksburg; a distopia disguised as a utopia where everyone has to follow all the rules Lord Business gives out or else they are killed. He also gathered up most Master Builders (basically people who user their surroundings to build amazing new things) to put in his Trophy Room/”Think Tank”.
- Not much is known about Emmet prior to the movie, however it is safe to say that he was a huge law-abiding citizen and, while he questioned “President” Business's motives at times, never really paid attention that he could be doing bad things.
- Emmet was also a construction worker who lives by himself, however one day he stumbles upon Wyldstyle, who is searching for the Piece of Resistance. When she runs away he chases her but he falls down a hole which leads to the piece or resistance. Out of curiosity he decides to tough it which makes him see an image of “The Man Upstairs” before passing out and having the Piece of Resistance glued to his back.
-When he wakes up he's found that he was captured by Good Cop/Bad Cop, confused as part of the remaining Master Builders who have formed a resistance against Lord Business. Emmet is then sentenced to his death before Wyldstyle comes back to rescue him, also thinking that he's a member of the resistance.
- Soon however Wyldstyle catches on that Emmet is not a member of the resistance and ends up feeling betrayed. She angrily brings him to Vitruvius in The Old West World for training. It is then when it's found out that, because Emmet's mind is so empty, he could easily get visions of “The Man Upstairs”.
- Just as the training is about to start however, Bad Cop (who had since Emmet's escape had his “Good Cop” side erased) finds them and chases them down. They were saved by Batman, Wyldstyle's girlfriend, but Bad Cop manages to put a tracking device on Emmet as they head to Cloud Cuckoo Land, where the remaining Master Builders are.
- However before any planning gets underway, not only do the other Master Builders realize that Emmet is some nobody who just stumbled upon the Piece of Resistance, but Bad Cop and the rest of Lord Business's underlings track Emmet down and completely destroy Cloud Cuckoo Land, capturing most of the Master Builders in the process. Emmet and a few of the Master Builders manage to escape through a submarine that they build. Except for Emmet who build a double decker couch. But the submarine breaks apart and they all hide in the couch, both avoiding capture and death. Soon after Metalbeard, a Master Building pirate who left before Bad Cop started his raid on Cloud Cuckoo Land, came in to let them onto the ship.
- Since the Double Decker couch actually worked so well and everyone else were out of ideas, the remaining Master Builders turned to Emmet to think up of a plan to stop him. Soon he realizes that the last thing Lord Business would expect is to follow the rules and sneak into his tower.
- This plan actually works until they're all ambushed just as Emmet is about to put the Piece of Resistance on the Kragle and they are sent to the Think Tank. Vitruvius fights off some of Lord Business allies but in the end Lord Business decapitates him. Before he dies, he admits to Emmet that he lied about the prophecy.
- Lord Business then ties Emmet to a machine that is set to electrocute (and presumably kill) everyone in the room including Bad Cop and cuts the Piece of Resistance off before going off to freeze Bricksburg with the Kragle. Just as he leaves, though, the ghost of Vitruvius comes to Emmet saying that he wasn't finished with telling Emmet the truth. While he did make up the prophesy, he still believes that Emmet can save the world if he believes in himself. Emmet decides to sacrifice himself by throwing himself off Lord Business's tower and off the edge of the universe, saving the Master Builders' lives and freeing them in the process.
- When Emmet falls off the edge of the universe, he finds himself in “the real world” as an inanimate being, although he still has his thoughts.
- Emmet sees Finn while playing with the set before “The Man Upstairs” comes in, seeing the “mess” Finn created and scolds him for it before he starts to “fix” the Legos in their proper place (or in Emmet's mind, stopping his escaped friends from saving the day).
- “The Man Upstairs” soon notices Emmet and scolds at Finn again for getting glue on him, so he takes him to his work table to get the glue off him. Then Emmet gets some inspiration from a cat poster and manages to work up the energy to fall off the table, getting Finn's attention and brings him back to Bricksburg to save the day.
- Once back in Bricksburg, Emmet gains the skills of a Master Builder due to his adventure in “The real world” and is able to get to get to Lord Business again. Once he gets there he shows Lord Business his “secret weapon”: a speech. He tells Lord Business how everyone is The Special, including him and that he doesn't have to be the bad guy. (which also has parallels with “The Man Upstairs” and Finn talking once “The Man Upstairs” realizes that he's been forcing his kid to not come into his Lego Room despite how he was having fun and he was being creative)
- This moves Lord Business to tears and it makes him decide to become a good guy, even taking the Piece of Resistance and putting it in the Kragle.
- After that everyone celebrates as Lord Business releases the antidote to the Kragle before the movie ends on aliens from the planet “Duplo” coming to attack.
Personality: Emmet is a cheerful and friendly guy, first of all. He tends to see the best in most people, even if they're evil or not nice to him. Heck even if people outright ignore him he still tries to be friends with him. This also makes him tend to see the best in people and makes him truly believe that everyone can be a good guy if they really try. This is including people who have committed murder in the past. This basically means that holding grudges is a thing that's pretty much impossible for Emmet, since even those he is shown to have dislike for he shows no animosity towards them after it's all over.
Emmet always tries to do what he thinks is best, even if he is hesitant about it at first. It is most evident when he decides to sacrifice his life in order to save his friends from dying from electrocution. Even when he's not good at helping the situation he still tries helping, so his “help” might not always be incredibly useful unfortunately.
He's also a little slow on the uptake. Usually if there's something that people know about, Emmet is the last one to find out. It's especially clear when he only finds out that his “work friends” didn't really care about him until they outright say so, despite them ignoring him whenever he tries to talk to them. In fact the few times he realizes in canon that something's up he almost immediately forgets about it. Like when he hears President Business whispering that anyone who doesn't follow his every rule will be killed, he forgets all about it when President Business announces that everyone is going to get a free taco and his love soon.
He can get kind of jealous in certain situations though. While it didn't play a huge part in the movie, he was clearly jealous of Batman for being Wyldstyle's boyfriend. At points he was clearly sarcastic when Batman disappeared and Wyldstyle was worried and he even called him a terrible person to her face. Of course in the later instance he was sort of justified since Batman left Wyldstyle to join a party and neither of them knew that he had any sort of plan in mind. Still that doesn't excuse him from the fact that he does have a bit of a jealous streak.
Emmet has some insecurity issues about not being lied or good at anything, due to everyone he knew before the events of the movie hardly remembering him and for most of the movie people doubted his abilities. While at his point he doesn't have much of them, sometimes he worries that people think he's annoying and don't want to be with him. He still tries to power through those feelings, especially if he gains some good CR in the game and he knows they're his friends, but even the best people have their moments of weakness.
This is mostly a head canon, but due to living in a society where you have to act the same as everyone else, I believe he still tends to fall into the whole “follow what everyone else is doing” thing, mostly in nonstressful situations. In more stressful situations he is more willing to take command, but if someone else seems better at leading than him he's more than willing to sit back and let them do their thing, although he will still actively participate in helping out. He probably even does the same morning routine he had before he became “The Special”.
Gem: Rectangular Red Jasper on his back. Basically I chose this because I thought it would fit the “Piece of Resistance” thing
Power Considerations: Master Building – Master Building is, basically, using your surroundings to make new objects in his universe. Since this world isn't made out of Legos though it would be more like alchemy but the materials won't matter.
When he starts off he should only be able to master build small objects, like creating a weak shield or a toy car (he also can't make edible or living objects with Master Building)
Increased Durability – Since Emmet is a Lego he's naturally more sturdy than a human. Unless you guys are uncomfortable with it, he will have the same amount of durability as a Lego in the game (he would still be “killed” if you hit him hard enough or like, destroyed him to the point where he can't piece himself back together. ). However as a power it would also apply to any shapeshifting he does.
Summoning – Similar to the game Lego Dimensions, Emmet would be able to summon animals to his command with this power. They would start out with something small like pigs but the more he “upgrades” them, the better the animal gets (possibly even getting a full sized Lego Dragon?)
Extra: He will be arriving as a regular sized Lego, but once he gets shapeshifting down he'll probably mess around with bigger sizes.
